Roses: what you need to know

Roses, prized for their beauty, elegance and fragrance, are considered the most romantic of flowers. Rose is the name that epitomizes beauty, a fact which is not just by coincidence, rather, well-acknowledged due to its characteristic dazzling colour combinations and variety to its sweet scents and delicate rows of petals.

Little wonder rose is such a special flower, it has evolved over a millennium with over three hundred species and tens of thousands of cultivars. They are indispensable in informal mixed planting schemes and with variety of colours and forms to choose from, there is a rose for every garden.

They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing, with stems often armed with sharp prickles. Different species of rose plant has been hybridized (crossbred) easily, a practice that is widely adopted in the development of garden roses.
